Last Day

Today was our last class with Mrs McDowall as we have our P7 Valedictory Service next Thursday. We spent the first part of the lesson trying to log on to the GLOW competition but it kept saying blocked. Mrs McDowall got Mrs Waddell to phone the help desk but they didn't manage to sort it out in time for us to enter the competition. If it gets fixed, Mrs McDowall is going to get the Primary 7s to try and enter it for us. Fingers crossed!
Then, we split into groups and each group was given a conversation to rehearse. We then created another podcast. This one is all about ma famille - my family. We used Odeo Studio and My Podcast to host the audio. We hope you enjoy it. We certainly had fun creating it!

Tu as des frères ou des soeurs?

Today we revised all the family names using the flashcards. Mrs McDowall kept putting up flashcards and asking us what they meant in English and French. We had to translate into English and back to French and sometimes we had to answer in both French and English. It was quite hard, but good fun.
Then, we matched the words in French to the figures on the board. There was one missing flashcard as you can see from the photo. Can you tell us what is missing?
Finally, we went on to Kirklandneuk's blog and answered their question about our brothers and sisters. Some of us couldn't remember how to do the accents so we will need to remind ourselves to use typeit next time.
Mrs McDowall has set us some homework for next week. We have to listen to this mp3 file and repeat all of the family names. She has also bookmarked it in delicious/inchinnan.

Ma Famille - 31/5/07

Today in French we practised saying the family names. We used Roller to help us with this. Roller said the words and we repeated it. Then we listened to this song and we had to figure out how many cousins Roller had. None of us got it right, so we listened to it again and it was 8!
Next we did this Lanuages Online activity and again we had to repeat the words. We had to drag the heads on to the correct place in the family tree. If it wasn't correct, it wouldn't let you place it.
Then we had to do the sheet below. You have to write mon or ma in the correct place. Mon is for a boy and ma is for a girl. Why don't you try this fantastic sheet and see if you can get it right?
Finally, we answered Kirklandneuk's question "Combien de personnes est-ce qu'il y a dans ta famille?" which means "How many people are in your family?" and all of us had different answers but they all said "Il y a ... personnes dans ma famille."

I met with the Pupil Council at their meeting on Friday 18th May to ask their views on the recent introduction of Golden Time. It had after all been their suggestion.

The good things - or stars were:

Everyone enjoys it and has fun

The teachers enjoy it and get to do things they like

It is good to have pupils from each stage of the school in the groups

We get to try new activities

We're not doing the same thing over again

Once a month is good as we look forward to it and it is a special time.

La famille

We started today by doing some questions to revise the answers that we have learned so far. We did really well and remembered most things.
Next we learned about the members of the family. You can see all the family members we know so far in the picture. We did a listening assessment and all of us got it right so we all got stickers!
Then we talked about brothers and sisters. To help us remember, we played a game using flashcards about "Tu as des frères ou des soeurs?". There were 12 cards face down and one person had to pick up 3 or 4 cards. The other person asked "Tu as des frères ou des soeurs?" and you had to reply how many you had. Some of the cards were blank so you could answer "Je suis enfant unique" which means I am an only child.You can see some of us playing the game below.
Finally we left comments on Kirlandneuk's blog. Today's lesson was fun!

20/4/07 Pupil Council Meeting

Today's meeting was all about Bully Buster Week which starts on Monday. As part of this, we will have the playground games out and the Classroom Assistants will demonstrate how to play the new games. The Primary 7s will be helping their buddies to play some of the new games and the Pupil Council will be getting out the parachute and doing some games. It should be great fun and we are looking forward to it!

Spring Revision 19/4/07

We started today by playing a game where we had to hide the cards and go to people and ask them questions. We had to go round and find a partner and then ask "Comment t’appelles-tu?" and "Où habites-tu?" and if they had the same card as us we made a pair!
Next, we revised all our French numbers up to 50 using flashcards.
Then, we quickly recapped on the days, months and seasons because we might have forgotten them over the Easter holidays, but we hadn't. After that, we went on to languages online and used this activity to spell the months of the year that it told us but we had a problem with the accent on août so Mrs McDowall is going to find out why it wasn't working.
We finished by going to Kirlandneuk's blog to leave comments. Some of us went to some of the other school blogs to leave comments and some did the activities Kirklandneuk suggested.
We enjoyed coming back to French. À jeudi! (See you next Thursday!)

Sophie in P4 came to our meeting today with a proposal. She asked the Pupil Council if the school would take part in the Rainbow Appeal in memory of her friend Johanna. We voted unaminously to accept her proposal. More details to follow.

Quel temps fait-il 2?

Last week Mrs McDowall gave us homework to make a dice with weather on it. We had to bring it in today. We got into pairs and rolled the dice, then one person asked the question "Quel temps fait-il?" Our partner had to look at the dice and answered in French with the actions. We weren't very good at saying the weather so Mrs McDowall told us to go and play and listening game to help us learn the words. We had to repeat everything we heard. You can try it out
here. Then, we tried the dice game again - this time we were much better!

Next we learnt how to say the seasons - l'hiver is winter, le printemps is spring, l'étè is summer and l'automne is autumn.

Last of all, Mrs McDowall let us use Roller to practise all the things we have learned so far.

Today Mrs McDowall had to go away so we had French with Mrs McCluskey. First we practised the weather and we showed Mrs McCluskey the actions. She thought that our action for snow should be like snowflakes falling but we prefer to throw snowballs!
Next we went on to tout-le-monde and heard an interactive story about a boy who builds a snowman and it comes to life. We understood everything that was happening even though it was all in French.
After that we went on to an Australian website and played activity 1 and 2. One of the games was pelmainism when we had to match the pairs with the picture of the weather and the writing. The other game was also about matching but this time we had to drag the words into the speech bubble.
Finally, we went on to Kirklandneuk's blog and answered their weather questions.
Our homework this week is to colour in and make the weather dice that Mrs Mcdowall gave us. We are going to use it in a game next week!

Le temps - The weather

We had to finish off our assessments today. We found the time one trickier than the one about days of the week and months of the year.

Mrs McDowall let us mark each others and we used the interactive whiteboard to show the correct times. We didn't all get it right first time!

Next, we began to learn some of the phrases for the weather. We made up some actions for each. Can you guess which phrases we are miming in the photographs? CLUE: We only used these phrases:
Il y a du vent, il gèle, il fait beau, il fait mauvais et il fait froid.

Today's French

Today we did a test on the days of the week and the months of the year. Our assesment sheet meant we had to write them down and spell them right so Mrs McDowall put the words on the white board for us to check. We then discussed the answers with Mrs McDowall and we had to spell them to her in French. Some of us needed to practise our alphabet so, at the end, we revised our French alphabet on the computer. Before that we went on to del.icio.us/inchinnan and played a French game where we had to spell out the time shown on the clock. Twenty past was hard because some of us forgot that it was Il and just did two ls!

Hier, aujourd'hui et demain!

Yesterday, today and tomorrow!
First we copied Mrs McDowall's chart from the smartboard. It was all about the days of the week in French. We had to complete it by working out which day was yesterday, today or tomorrow. Mrs McDowall timed us. We had only two minutes but it was a trick as four of the answers were the same! Only seven noticed and worked it out!!

Mrs McDowall set up some digital times on the board and we used our numbers to answer her. We were wondering why we had only gone up to 59!! Now we know.

Then we created a graph of our birthdays using an online graph. We had to spell the months of the year using "ça c’est écrit ..." while Mrs McDowall wrote them in. People had to come out and touch the whiteboard when it was their birthday month. You can see our graph and our days of the week chart below.

Quelle heure est-il?

We were learning about time today. We used the whiteboard to show times and Mrs McDowall taught us the question "Quelle heure est-il?" which means "What time is it?" Look at our pictures and see if you can answer "Quelle heure est-il?" in French. We have given you a helping hand by giving you some answers!

Les douze mois de l'anee

The first thing we did today was a worksheet to revise our numbers. We had to work out Quel numéro monque? which means which number is missing? It was quite tricky!
Next today we were taught how to say the Months of the Year. Can you guess which ones these are - fevrier, aout, avril, juin et septembre? Mrs McDowall put three cards in each corner and then she told us the months in English. We had to find that month and then tell her it in French. Then, she told us something that happened in a particular month and we had to find the correct month and, again, tell her it in French.

Finally we went to Kirklandneuk's blog which asked us to look at French television and find out what was on today - jeudi vingt-cinq janvier - at this time. Today at 11.30 it was Malcom - Frapper et recevoir which we think is Malcolm in the Middle. Do you think we are right?

Aujourd'hui c'est jeudi!

Today is Thursday! We started today's lesson doing the register in French. Then we listened to a tape which told us things in French and we had to write the answers down in English, but the tape broke!! We were disappointed and Mrs McDowall was cross and said that's why she wanted it on a CD!! She had to make up some answers for the football scores we were to write down. She made really big numbers which was not realistic for a game of football.
Then we were introduced to the Days of the Week and learned a song about them. Hopefully you can hear us singing it on our school website.
We then went on to Kirlandneuk's blog to answer their age questions. It was fun trying to find the answers. We have decided to leave them some questions this week. Here they are!

World War II: The Home Front - Two Stars and a Wish

Our topic was World War II: The Home Front. At the beginning of the topic we had to think about all the things we knew about the war and all the things we would like to find out. Now that we have finished our topic, Mrs McDowall has asked us to think of two things we loved about it and one thing we didn't like or would have liked to find out more. this is what we came up with!

Primary 5 French - 11/1/07

The first thing we did this morning was the register in French. Then we revised our numbers using bananas. Here is a picture of us using the bananas.

Next we did mental maths in French using French numbers for adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying.
After that we learned how to ask somebody their age - Quel age-as tu? - and the answer was J'ai ..... ans. Only two people in our class are still 8 - J'ai huit ans. Everyone else is 9 - J'ai neuf ans. Mrs McDowall wrote numbers on the whiteboard and we answered J'ai ..... ans. We had to answer her questions really quickly, but it was good fun!
Then we did two tests. The first one was all about numbers and people's ages. The second one had a mistake in it! It said dans ma trousse instead of dans mon sac, but we still managed to draw the objects in the schoolbag!
Finally we did numbers using our bananas and Mrs McDowall took pictures.
While we were writing the blog, the rest of the class were doing this number game.

Joyeux Noel et Bonne Annee

Today we looked at Kirklandneuk's blog and saw how they had been practising their numbers. We tried out their ideas and left them some comments - as you can see from the pictures, we had fun trying out the ideas! Then, Mrs McDowall taught us two French Christmas songs - Vive le vent, which we sang to the tune of Jingle Bells and Joyeux Noel, which you can listen to on our photos. It was quite hard to get our tongues round all the words but we gave it our best shot. Joyeux Noel et Bonne Année tout le monde.

We have been working on our podcast for the last two weeks. We had a bit of rerecording to do as some of our original work didn't come out very clearly, but it is finally all ready. Mrs McDowall is trying to find a way to post our mp3 here - a school network issue? - but until then, you can find it on our school website . It lasts nearly 5 minutes which is quite long but we are really proud of the end results. We hope you have fun listening to it - we certainly had great fun making it!

Having read all the posts from Primary 5, we decided that if they could do it, so could we. So we put together our own post and our very own podcast. Mrs McDowall called it our half hour podcast! We think it sounds really professional. Our voices sound different when we record them, but we do think our French accents are cool! We haven't figured out how to post a mp3 within our blog (help, please?) so we are linking this back to our school website where we have posted our podcast. Enjoy listening!

Rationing - Two Stars and a Wish

In P7 our topic is World War II. We have been doing lots of interesting activities. Today we were finding out all about food and rationing during the War. We filled in some missing words and then we used this LTScotland website to find out all about it. Mrs McDowall (our teacher on a Friday) asked us to think of Two Stars and a Wish for things we learned today about rationing. These are some of them.

Two things we learned:
• In August 1940 the Government passed a law that made the waste of food illegal.
• Petrol was rationed from the beginning of the war but a small allowance was available to private motorists.
• Before 1939 imported about 55 million tonnes of food each year from other countries.
• In May 1940 food rationing was tightened up.
• In 1953 there was once again unlimited butter and sugar.
• 1954 was the official end to rationing.
• Food rationing was introduced in January 1940.
• Fish, jam, biscuits, breakfast cereal, cheese, eggs, milk and canned fruit all became strictly rationed and fruits like lemons, oranges and bananas disappeared from the British diet as these had always been imported.
• You only got enough clothes rations for one outfit a year.
• Some people didn't have meat so they killed rabbits.
• Ice cream was banned in 1942.
• Chocolate was expensive during rationing.

One thing we wanted to learn more about was:
• The Black Market
• Clothes rationing
• What vehicles bombed or sank our imported food and clothing materials
• How the war started
• What make up women used
• The Home Guard

French on St Andrew's Day

We started today by naming the objects in our school bag. We played the pairs game again. We had to say "Dans mon sac il y a ... et ..." and our partner asked "C'est une paire?" and we had to say "Oui" or "Non". While we were playing Mrs McDowall came round and recorded us! We thought our voices sounded different. We are going to make these recordings into a podcast next week.
We then went on to Loirston Primary blog and left comments about their classroom objects podcast. Some of us left comments in French. We also left some comments on Kirklandneuk's blog . Last of all we listened to the alphabet song which is to the tune of twinkle, twinkle little star. We noticed that all the different colours of letters were to show which ones sounded the same. We are going to learn the song next week and include it in our podcast.

Today's French

Today we learned new words about things in your bag.The words we learned were: une trousse which is a pencil case, un cahier is a jotter, une regle is a ruler, un stylo is a pen, une gomme is a rubber, un taille-crayon is a sharpener, un sac is a bag, un crayon is a pencil and un livre is a book. We also played a game. We had nine pictures of the school things we just told you about and words to match the cards. The rules were no cheating and play fair. The instructions were to place the cards upside down, turn them over and look for a set. It was tres bien!!!!!!!!!

Numbers 13 - 19

Bonjour! The first thing we did today was to go to Kirklandneuk's blog and leave them some answers to their sums. Next, we learned numbers between 13 and 19. We played a game with numbers. We stood in two lines, and you had to think of a number and write it on the person's back with your finger. We also played another game. Three people had a piece of paper with a French number on it and the people had to guess and say the number in French. Miss Reid took some pictures of us playing this game. We also did a listening activity and everyone got six out of six!

More French Numbers

Bonjour, today in French we did more work on French numbers to 12. We have learned how to add, subract, multipy and divide sums in French. Mrs McDowall read out some sums and we had to answer them. We both got 10 out of 10! We also used the bananas again to show the numbers.

We also did a test to see what we remembered about French greetings. Do you remember Bonne nuit means good night and Bon soir means good evening? Some of us forgot!

We learned a French song called Mon merle a perdu une plume and Mrs McDowall recorded it and took pictures of us singing it. It is on our School Website for you to listen to.

We did a listening activity on where people lived. We asked Ou habite tu? and replied J'habite à .... en ......

We really enjoyed French today. It was good fun and we are glad we have now learned a French song. :-)

Counting French Numbers

We went on to our French blog and were looking at all the comments we have been getting. A lot of comments were from our class and other people in the school and Kirklandneuk Primary had left us loads of comments which made us feel very very happy.
Mrs McDowall introduced numbers 1 - 12 to us. Then we got out the banana number cards and most of us got the numbers right. This is us doing our numbers.

Today in French we were given out our French folders. We did a writing sheet where we followed lines to see who was who. Then we wrote Je m'appelle and their name. We learnt how to say some of the countries in Europe. After that we went on to Kirklandneuk's blog and left comments.
For homework we have to listen to a podcast on Kirklandneuk's blog page.
We really enjoyed French today. It was exciting!

P6 Healthy Living Week

This week (October 9th - 13th, 2006) is our Healthy Living Week. We have been asked to keep a healthy diary of all the healthy food, drink and activities we do this week. We are going to leave comments about what we do.
Throughout the week we are having a Walk to School Week to win the Golden Trainer. We hope we win it!
On Monday, we are going to be making Smoothies - yummy!!
On Tuesday, we are making healthy wraps and thinking about the effects of fizzy/sugary drinks.
On Wednesday, we are watching a PACE drama.
On Thursday, we are going swimming and we have a Poster Challenge to create a poster of a healthy diet in an hour!
On Friday, we are having a Harvest Service and a Skip for Scotland challenge.
The other classes in the school are doing lots of healthy activities as well.
We are really excited about it and hope it will be great fun. We want everyone to stay safe and healthy.

Today in French we used cards to find a partner and we had a conversation to find out their name. We said, "Salut" or "Bonjour" and then we asked them their name.

We learned how to say "What is her name?" - Comment s'appelle-t-elle? and "What is his name? - Comment s'appelle-t-il?
The answer was Elle s'appelle ..... and Il s'appelle .......

We can now meet a French speaking person and say hello, how are you, what is your name, what is his name, what is her name and goodbye! We feel ça va trés bien!!
