23/3/07 Pupil Council Meeting

Thank you for your comments.
We have raised £189.50 for Comic Relief. Thank you to all of you for taking part.
Sophie in P4 came to our meeting today with a proposal. She asked the Pupil Council if the school would take part in the Rainbow Appeal in memory of her friend Johanna. We voted unaminously to accept her proposal. More details to follow.

Quel temps fait-il 2?

Last week Mrs McDowall gave us homework to make a dice with weather on it. We had to bring it in today. We got into pairs and rolled the dice, then one person asked the question "Quel temps fait-il?" Our partner had to look at the dice and answered in French with the actions. We weren't very good at saying the weather so Mrs McDowall told us to go and play and listening game to help us learn the words. We had to repeat everything we heard. You can try it out
here. Then, we tried the dice game again - this time we were much better!

Next we learnt how to say the seasons - l'hiver is winter, le printemps is spring, l'étè is summer and l'automne is autumn.

Last of all, Mrs McDowall let us use Roller to practise all the things we have learned so far.

15/3/07 French

Today Mrs McDowall had to go away so we had French with Mrs McCluskey. First we practised the weather and we showed Mrs McCluskey the actions. She thought that our action for snow should be like snowflakes falling but we prefer to throw snowballs!
Next we went on to tout-le-monde and heard an interactive story about a boy who builds a snowman and it comes to life. We understood everything that was happening even though it was all in French.
After that we went on to an Australian website and played activity 1 and 2. One of the games was pelmainism when we had to match the pairs with the picture of the weather and the writing. The other game was also about matching but this time we had to drag the words into the speech bubble.
Finally, we went on to Kirklandneuk's blog and answered their weather questions.
Our homework this week is to colour in and make the weather dice that Mrs Mcdowall gave us. We are going to use it in a game next week!

14/3/07 Pupil Council Meeting

Remember Friday is Red Nose Day. Everybody can wear red if they bring 50p but no football strips.

We saw Andrew's thank-you for our Talent Show on William's Syndrome.

Quel temps fait-il?

Le temps - The weather

We had to finish off our assessments today. We found the time one trickier than the one about days of the week and months of the year.

Mrs McDowall let us mark each others and we used the interactive whiteboard to show the correct times. We didn't all get it right first time!

Next, we began to learn some of the phrases for the weather. We made up some actions for each. Can you guess which phrases we are miming in the photographs? CLUE: We only used these phrases:
Il y a du vent, il gèle, il fait beau, il fait mauvais et il fait froid.

Today's French

Today we did a test on the days of the week and the months of the year. Our assesment sheet meant we had to write them down and spell them right so Mrs McDowall put the words on the white board for us to check. We then discussed the answers with Mrs McDowall and we had to spell them to her in French. Some of us needed to practise our alphabet so, at the end, we revised our French alphabet on the computer. Before that we went on to del.icio.us/inchinnan and played a French game where we had to spell out the time shown on the clock. Twenty past was hard because some of us forgot that it was Il and just did two ls!

Hier, aujourd'hui et demain!

Yesterday, today and tomorrow!
First we copied Mrs McDowall's chart from the smartboard. It was all about the days of the week in French. We had to complete it by working out which day was yesterday, today or tomorrow. Mrs McDowall timed us. We had only two minutes but it was a trick as four of the answers were the same! Only seven noticed and worked it out!!

Mrs McDowall set up some digital times on the board and we used our numbers to answer her. We were wondering why we had only gone up to 59!! Now we know.

Then we created a graph of our birthdays using an online graph. We had to spell the months of the year using "ça c’est écrit ..." while Mrs McDowall wrote them in. People had to come out and touch the whiteboard when it was their birthday month. You can see our graph and our days of the week chart below.

Quelle heure est-il?

We were learning about time today. We used the whiteboard to show times and Mrs McDowall taught us the question "Quelle heure est-il?" which means "What time is it?" Look at our pictures and see if you can answer "Quelle heure est-il?" in French. We have given you a helping hand by giving you some answers!

Les douze mois de l'anee

The first thing we did today was a worksheet to revise our numbers. We had to work out Quel numéro monque? which means which number is missing? It was quite tricky!
Next today we were taught how to say the Months of the Year. Can you guess which ones these are - fevrier, aout, avril, juin et septembre? Mrs McDowall put three cards in each corner and then she told us the months in English. We had to find that month and then tell her it in French. Then, she told us something that happened in a particular month and we had to find the correct month and, again, tell her it in French.

We went on to this website and tried out some games all about the months of the year. Why don't you try them too?
Finally we went to Kirklandneuk's blog which asked us to look at French television and find out what was on today - jeudi vingt-cinq janvier - at this time. Today at 11.30 it was Malcom - Frapper et recevoir which we think is Malcolm in the Middle. Do you think we are right?

Aujourd'hui c'est jeudi!

Today is Thursday! We started today's lesson doing the register in French. Then we listened to a tape which told us things in French and we had to write the answers down in English, but the tape broke!! We were disappointed and Mrs McDowall was cross and said that's why she wanted it on a CD!! She had to make up some answers for the football scores we were to write down. She made really big numbers which was not realistic for a game of football.
Then we were introduced to the Days of the Week and learned a song about them. Hopefully you can hear us singing it on our school website.
We then went on to Kirlandneuk's blog to answer their age questions. It was fun trying to find the answers. We have decided to leave them some questions this week. Here they are!

World War II: The Home Front - Two Stars and a Wish

Our topic was World War II: The Home Front. At the beginning of the topic we had to think about all the things we knew about the war and all the things we would like to find out. Now that we have finished our topic, Mrs McDowall has asked us to think of two things we loved about it and one thing we didn't like or would have liked to find out more. this is what we came up with!

Primary 5 French - 11/1/07

The first thing we did this morning was the register in French. Then we revised our numbers using bananas. Here is a picture of us using the bananas.

Next we did mental maths in French using French numbers for adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying.
After that we learned how to ask somebody their age - Quel age-as tu? - and the answer was J'ai ..... ans. Only two people in our class are still 8 - J'ai huit ans. Everyone else is 9 - J'ai neuf ans. Mrs McDowall wrote numbers on the whiteboard and we answered J'ai ..... ans. We had to answer her questions really quickly, but it was good fun!
Then we did two tests. The first one was all about numbers and people's ages. The second one had a mistake in it! It said dans ma trousse instead of dans mon sac, but we still managed to draw the objects in the schoolbag!
Finally we did numbers using our bananas and Mrs McDowall took pictures.
While we were writing the blog, the rest of the class were doing this number game.

Joyeux Noel et Bonne Annee

Today we looked at Kirklandneuk's blog and saw how they had been practising their numbers. We tried out their ideas and left them some comments - as you can see from the pictures, we had fun trying out the ideas! Then, Mrs McDowall taught us two French Christmas songs - Vive le vent, which we sang to the tune of Jingle Bells and Joyeux Noel, which you can listen to on our photos. It was quite hard to get our tongues round all the words but we gave it our best shot. Joyeux Noel et Bonne Année tout le monde.

Well with a bit of home tinkering I think I have managed to upload our podcast via Odeo Studio. Fingers crossed it works and doesn't have too much feedback this time!!

Bonjour et Bienvenue!

We have been working on our podcast for the last two weeks. We had a bit of rerecording to do as some of our original work didn't come out very clearly, but it is finally all ready. Mrs McDowall is trying to find a way to post our mp3 here - a school network issue? - but until then, you can find it on our school website . It lasts nearly 5 minutes which is quite long but we are really proud of the end results. We hope you have fun listening to it - we certainly had great fun making it!

P6 French

Having read all the posts from Primary 5, we decided that if they could do it, so could we. So we put together our own post and our very own podcast. Mrs McDowall called it our half hour podcast! We think it sounds really professional. Our voices sound different when we record them, but we do think our French accents are cool! We haven't figured out how to post a mp3 within our blog (help, please?) so we are linking this back to our school website where we have posted our podcast. Enjoy listening!

Rationing - Two Stars and a Wish

In P7 our topic is World War II. We have been doing lots of interesting activities. Today we were finding out all about food and rationing during the War. We filled in some missing words and then we used this LTScotland website to find out all about it. Mrs McDowall (our teacher on a Friday) asked us to think of Two Stars and a Wish for things we learned today about rationing. These are some of them.

Two things we learned:
• In August 1940 the Government passed a law that made the waste of food illegal.
• Petrol was rationed from the beginning of the war but a small allowance was available to private motorists.
• Before 1939 imported about 55 million tonnes of food each year from other countries.
• In May 1940 food rationing was tightened up.
• In 1953 there was once again unlimited butter and sugar.
• 1954 was the official end to rationing.
• Food rationing was introduced in January 1940.
• Fish, jam, biscuits, breakfast cereal, cheese, eggs, milk and canned fruit all became strictly rationed and fruits like lemons, oranges and bananas disappeared from the British diet as these had always been imported.
• You only got enough clothes rations for one outfit a year.
• Some people didn't have meat so they killed rabbits.
• Ice cream was banned in 1942.
• Chocolate was expensive during rationing.

One thing we wanted to learn more about was:
• The Black Market
• Clothes rationing
• What vehicles bombed or sank our imported food and clothing materials
• How the war started
• What make up women used
• The Home Guard

French on St Andrew's Day

We started today by naming the objects in our school bag. We played the pairs game again. We had to say "Dans mon sac il y a ... et ..." and our partner asked "C'est une paire?" and we had to say "Oui" or "Non". While we were playing Mrs McDowall came round and recorded us! We thought our voices sounded different. We are going to make these recordings into a podcast next week.
We then went on to Loirston Primary blog and left comments about their classroom objects podcast. Some of us left comments in French. We also left some comments on Kirklandneuk's blog . Last of all we listened to the alphabet song which is to the tune of twinkle, twinkle little star. We noticed that all the different colours of letters were to show which ones sounded the same. We are going to learn the song next week and include it in our podcast.

Today's French

Today we learned new words about things in your bag.The words we learned were: une trousse which is a pencil case, un cahier is a jotter, une regle is a ruler, un stylo is a pen, une gomme is a rubber, un taille-crayon is a sharpener, un sac is a bag, un crayon is a pencil and un livre is a book. We also played a game. We had nine pictures of the school things we just told you about and words to match the cards. The rules were no cheating and play fair. The instructions were to place the cards upside down, turn them over and look for a set. It was tres bien!!!!!!!!!

Numbers 13 - 19

Bonjour! The first thing we did today was to go to Kirklandneuk's blog and leave them some answers to their sums. Next, we learned numbers between 13 and 19. We played a game with numbers. We stood in two lines, and you had to think of a number and write it on the person's back with your finger. We also played another game. Three people had a piece of paper with a French number on it and the people had to guess and say the number in French. Miss Reid took some pictures of us playing this game. We also did a listening activity and everyone got six out of six!
